What is the Electronic Cigarette?

An Electronic cigarette, also known as a personal vaporizer, smokeless cigarette, or E-cig is a revolutionary way to enjoy smoking at a substantially lower cost and to smoke in most places where tobacco cigarettes are prohibited.

There are several parts to an electronic cigarette.

First, you have the battery, which resembles the long tobacco filled paper.

Second, you have a cartridge which resembles the filter on a traditional cigarette. Inside the cartridge is capsule that contains a nicotine liquid commonly called E-liquid.

Third, you have the atomizer, which is the heating element that turns the E-liquid into a vapor which is inhaled.

E-liquids come in various strengths to replicate full flavored cigarettes (high nicotine), light cigarettes (low nicotine), and zero nicotine. Additionally, E-liquid comes in menthol and tobacco flavors.

E-liquid comes in bulk amounts as well. There are many more flavor options when buying E-liquid in bulk such as strawberry cheesecake, red Bull, and mango to name a few.

How long do the cartridges last?

Each cartridge lasts about 8 cigarettes. This depends on the individual user and how they smoke, how long of a drag they take, and how deep they inhale.

How does it work?

The Electronic Cigarette works in the following way:

First, charge the battery to full capacity.

Second, put a new cartridge on the atomizer.

Third, inhale in a long, slow drag and enjoy!

What is in the E-liquid?

The base liquid of the cartridge is a mixture of distilled water, nicotine, flavoring, and Propylene glycol.

Propylene Glycol is used in many industries to include food production, and pharmaceuticals. According to wikipedia and www.proplyene-glycol, it is often found in food coloring, food additives, and flavorings, injectible drugs, mouthwash and toothpastes among many other household products.

What powers the device?

A rechargeable lithium battery powers the device. The batteries last around 300 charges, so you should get almost a year's worth of usage from each battery.

For daily use, the mini-electronic cigarette batteris last around 2 cartridges or 15 cigarettes worth before you have to recharge them.

Do I need to turn the battery on and off?

No. There are two versions of electronic cigarettes, manual and automatic.

Manual electronic cigarettes have a button you press to activate the battery before you inhale each time.

Automatic batteries are activated by a sensor that detects the air flow as you inhale. These batteries turn on and off as you use them.

How long does it take to charge the battery?

For the mini-electronic cigarettes, the charging time is about 3 hours. For the larger battery models like EGO, the charging time is 6-8 hours.

What about the smoke emitted and second hand smoke?

The "smoke" that a user exhales is mostly water vapor and not hot, burning gases like a traditional cigarette. An electronic cigarette doesn't emit smoke on its own and there is no second hand smoke.

There is no lingering smell, and at most a bystander might detect the slight smell of the flavoring for a few seconds.

E-cigarettes will not leave a smoke smell, so it is safe to smoke indoors, in your car, without worrying that you will leave an odor in the fabric.

Where can I smoke my electronic cigarette?

Most indoor establishments will not object to a user smoking indoors, as there is no odor, ash, or second hand smoke, but it is always advisable to ask permission first.

What is Propylene glycol?

“Also known as propane-1,2-diol,  it is an organic compound, usually a faint sweet, odorless, and colorless clear viscous(thick & sticky) liquid that is hygroscopic (absorbs water from the air) and miscible(capable of mixing with water) with water, acetone and chloroform.”  Wikipedia 09/08

Propylene glycol is used in the following ways:

  • As a moisturiser in medicine, cosmetics, food, toothpaste, mouth wash and tobacco products.
  • In fog machines.
  • As a medical lubricant.
  • As an emulsifier (prevents separation) in Angostura and orange bitters.
  • As a solvent for food colorings and flavorings.
  • As a humectant (to keep product moist) food additive labelled E1520.

Is it safe?

Propylene Glycol poisoning has apparently only occurred through inappropriate intravenous (straight into the vein) use, or accidental ingestion by children. However, you will need to ingest a lot of propylene glycol to cause harm.  “Serious toxicity will occur only at extremely high intakes over a relatively short period of time”  www.dow.com 09/08.

The U.S Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has stated propylene glycol to be “generally recognized as safe.” Wikipedia 09/08.

Propylene glycol shows no evidence of being a carcinogen or being genotoxic. Propylene glycol can be irritating to some individuals.

The electronic cigarette is a new product, and as yet does not have a data base of clinical trials and evidence as to the long term effects on the smoker.
